Drying & Dehumidification Questions

Can I just run fans and open the windows?

Household fans move air but do not remove moisture from the air, and on a humid Massachusetts day open windows add more of it. While you wait for the crew, keep the room closed rather than opening it to the humid air.

Why are readings taken more than once?

Moisture moves through materials at different rates, so a wall can test dry at the surface while the cavity behind it is still wet. Repeat readings show whether drying is working and tell us when it is safe to close up the wall.

Do you dry the inside of walls without removing drywall?

Often we can. Small weep holes at the base of the wall let air move through the cavity, and dehumidifiers pull the moisture out. When the cavity holds soaked insulation or the drywall has already failed, the affected section is removed instead.

Does the drying equipment need to run while nobody is home?

The equipment can run unattended, and many homeowners stay elsewhere while a large job is under way. We check the machines on our visits and let you know about any water that needs emptying in between.
